Why Modern Music is Awful

…and Why I’m still an unknown, obscure singer/songwriter even after 40 years of writing actual high quality music and lyrics, and recording & releasing 18 CD’s arranged by musical geniuses like Gene Moore and Joe Mennonna. And why NONE of the songs from my most recent album NEVER even get NOMINATED and definitely won’t win any songwriting contests or even get heard…

I feel so much better now. It’s not ME! It’s not my FAULT! It’s the usual modern “Factory Farm” musical vapidity paradigm…

In case you’re too distracted to watch the video, I’ll summarize:

Actual Studies show that since from 1955-2010 Harmonic complexity, Timbral diversity, and loudness have moved steadily in the direction of homogenized, repetitive, LOUD musical brainwashing… blecch!

Timbral diversity, in case your wondering is “texture,” “color” and “quality.” IN other words, the songs richness and depth of sound. Peaked in the 1960’s and have decreased steadily.

Loudness… to paraphrase a Beatles song, “We’re getting louder all the time… Louder, louder louder…”

To use the Beatles analogy a little bit more… compare the fullness and complexity of Sargent Pepper: A full orchestra was used. Risks were taken. Subtleties were woven throughout vs. today’s one dimensional pop tracks that are basically midi keyboards playing samples of actual instruments with pounding “beats” and Auto tuned vocals.

Analysts discovered that not only do all these songs SEEM to sound the same, when they analyzed the melodies, rhythms and lyrics of pop music they discovered that the majority of pop hits use the exact same sequence of notes and chord progressions. With the standard “millennial whoop”: whoa whoa!

Of course the music that triggers the FAMILIARITY neurons in most peoples brains reassures people that they will hear something familiar that they will feel safe with.

Lyrics: bad news there too. the lyric intelligence of billboard pop. over the past 10 years average lyric intelligence has dropped… lyrics are also getting shorter and repeating the same phrase more often.

And THIS: Why most pop hits today sound the same? pretty much written by 2 guys, Dr. Luke and Max Martin.

These two have written virtually every mainstream hit in the last 10 years…

NOW do you understand why I’m actively pursuing Holistic Grazing Management and sustainable agriculture as my “Back up plan?”

If you have enough attention span to still be with me here, please humor me by watching one of my music videos… and if you can stand my un-homogenized, un-commercial musical complexity… it would help if you could leave a comment and give me a thumbs up before I give up in disgust… pleeeeeeze….

thank you. I covet your ears.
peace out,

Mark
