Today I’m starting my new “Music That Matters” series with Bruce Cockburn’s “Pacing The Cage.” Please take a moment to get your good headphones and to allow the song to be your focus. Then, keep scrolling down.
I spend a little time each day searching Youtube for music that “doesn’t suck.” Much the way I used to search through the record bins and listening stations of record stores years ago when there were such things…
So much of what passes for “music” or “lyrics” in the mainstream media is vapid and tawdry, metaphorically impoverished or just processed and auto-tuned beyond recognition.
For what it’s worth, I thought I’d use my blog here to share some of the music that is meaningful to me. Pretty much top of the list is Bruce Cockburn. And this song cuts DEEP into our rising levels of modern angst.
My own song, “The Key To Your Cage” (see below) is probably, no, definitely, my own personal answer to this song… but the sweet melancholy with Cockburn’s “razor edge lyrics” cuts through the modern “crap” and opens our very human, very hurt hearts. Cleaning the wound is the first part of healing.
For context, contrast and the “healing” portion of this post, I offer an early version of “The Key To Your Cage” (NOTE: I decided later on in the recording process to make “keys” singular.)
I wish I could have a conversation with Bruce Cockburn. His songwriting gives me hope that somehow, someday I can find an audience of people who “get” this kind of music that matters. There was a time when music like his mattered. I believe we will find ourselves needing to hear this kind of music. It just may take a while.
Thank you to Bruce Cockburn who has continued to write song throughout his 50 year career.
And Thank YOU for your time and attention!
– Mark
