Or just “Gullible”?
As someone who is highly empathic, sensitive to energy and emotion I’ve struggled for years with the added twist that I’m a really, really good “hypnotic subject”.
In other words I’m “highly suggestible”.
I used to think this meant I was “Gullible”.
One day at dinner my mom said to me, “Hey Mark, did you know that the word “gullible” is actually NOT even in the dictionary?”
“Wow!” I answered. “The word gullible isn’t in the dictionary?”
“Nope,” she said pointing up. “But it IS written on the ceiling….”
At which point I of course involuntarily LOOKED UP…
And we ALL laughed our heads off…
LOL…
The challenge with being highly suggestible is that if the wrong input, the wrong energy the wrong advice gets in through the critical filter of our conscious mind, we end up being hypnotized with negative, self defeating, limited, lack thinking.
So two of the strategies that I personally use every day and that I teach my clients and students are:
- Be careful who you hang out with and be careful what you watch or listen to.
- Take charge of the process of what DOES go into your mind by asking powerful “rhetorical” questions.
For me that means pretty much NEVER watching TV or hanging out with people who are negative and victim thinkers.
And by careful I don’t mean “fearful”. I mean discerning.
Believe it or not Ripley, You and I are in charge of our own minds. And being highly suggestible is actually a great advantage if YOU are the one making the suggestions to your own unconscious mind. This is the ultimate in self hypnosis, auto suggestion or mental hygiene.
Think of your unconscious mind as a SPONGE. It soaks up whatever thoughts you allow in. It does not have the ability to discern if something is true or helpful to you or not.
This is one reason that the “Why” and “How” questions are so powerful and must be carefully and consciously “dropped in”.
Your unconscious mind is hardwired to build evidence to support whatever question you ask of yourself. You do not have to consciously answer the question. Your UCM will automatically do that outside of your conscious awareness.
If you ask yourself disempowering, helpless, or hopeless questions… Your unconscious mind springs to work to prove the presuppositions in the question.
If you ask yourself empowering, powerful, hopeful, resourceful questions…. You guessed it, Your unconscious mind springs to work to prove the presuppositions in the questions and the answers will be empowering, powerful, hopeful and resourceful.
Why does it work out better than I can possibly imagine?
WDIWOBTICPI? has a powerful set of presuppositions that cause your unconscious mind to vigorously PROVE it’s truth. Armed with this “opinion” of the world, your mind begins to filter out all of the conflicting evidence that does not support the question. It can only filter the world and focus on the things that prove the point.
Does that make sense?
For example on Monday, my rental car got towed causing me to miss my flight and have to cough up money that I did not expect to spend. In the past I would have asked, “Why did this bad thing happen to me?”
Instead I IMMEDIATELY started chanting, “Why does this work out better than I can possibly imagine?”
And then I began to ask “HOW IS THIS GOOD?” “How is this perfect?” “How can I turn this to my advantage?” “How can I use this?”
To make a long story short. It turned out that there were two significant people I needed to meet that I would only meet on Tuesday’s flight. So somehow I had to miss my flight on Monday.
Now, I could have focused on who was on Monday’s flight that I needed to meet instead.
But Monday’s flight was clearly not going to happen so to waste energy on that would have definitely been counter productive.
At the risk of hitting this technique too much, I highly, highly suggest you incorporate asking this question (preferably hand written on an actual sheet of paper with an actual pen or pencil in order to get it into your neurology) every morning before you start your day and every evening before you go to bed.
The reason I “preach” this so frequently is that there is FREQUENT NEED FOR THIS TOOL in every one of our lives.
This is actually the linguistic antidote to Anxiety which is basically asking powerfully negative why and how questions (as well as negative “What if” questions) about your future.
I find that over the years the majority of my anxiety clients have habitually asked themselves extremely negative questions with extremely negative presuppositions about their futures…
And the body does not know the difference between what is real and what is imagined…so usually a fight, flight or freeze “knee jerk” reaction follows negative future “stories”.
So if we are going to make stuff up that influences our state, our health, our well being, doesn’t it make sense to make up stuff that actually causes us to feel good?
And doesn’t it also make sense to be OPEN to the possibility that this “thing that just happened that seems to not be good”, just might contain something wonderful for you?
I now know that my car got towed so I could miss Monday’s flight in order to be on Tuesday’s flight so that I could sit next to exactly the right person who is in a position to assist me in creating a Spiritual Music Sanctuary here in Albany NY.
Where and how it goes next will be fascinating… And no matter what happens…
I would like to suggest to myself that I continue to ask, “Why Does It Work Out Better Than I Can Possibly Imagine?”
I would like to suggest that you also ask yourself repeatedly today and every day,
“WHY DOES IT WORK OUT BETTER THAN I CAN POSSIBLY IMAGINE?”
And just so you know, “Gullible” is actually in the dictionary and it is NOT written on the ceiling. Trust me on this one.
peace out,
– Mark
