Commentary:
the Late Summer and Fall of 1990 was a pretty intense time for me. Not only was it a time I wrote some of my best political songs, it's when I started writing kids songs as well. In the midst of everything this gem of a love song just smacked me upside the head and demanded to be written. Behind the story was the crash of the 1980's real estate bubble. I had purchased 4 houses for nothing down pretty much at the top of the market. The bubble popped and I was totally freaked out about how I was going to pay all the mortgages. With the bubble went my income from title insurance which depended on the real estate and mortgage markets. In order to buy the houses for nothing down, I'd fibbed "just a little" on my mortgage applications...As a naive 29 year old who had always tried to be good and do the right thing, I was convinced I would be going to jail. I think that's where the intensity of this song comes from.
