If You Meet The Buddha On The Road...

Song # 164    Composition date: 5/10/1991
Commentary Date: 11/25/2007

CD: Visions & Voices

Commentary:
I had started to do some serious work on myself and came across a book by the Title, "If You Meet The Buddha On The Road, Kill Him!" The title of the book was taken from a Zen Buddhist Koan. A Koan is a paradox a teacher assigns to a student. The student then goes off and ponders the Koan until he gets an insight. Anyway, the point of the book was that the responsibility for change is not the therapist's. It is the client's.

It's not the therapist's job to heal the client. It's the clients job.

To put it another way, Michael Jordan had great coaches but ultimately He had to play the game not the coach.

This was one of my first wake up calls to start taking "response-ability" and stop being a victim. This is the process we in NLP call "getting to cause" or being on the "Cause side of the Cause and Effect equation". Anyway, my friend Joel Arthur guided the cool Manhattan Transfer style back up vocals with Andrea Nettleton and Diane Legro. A word of warning, I've had people misunderstand this song. It's not about going around killing buddhas! It is about owning your own process and not abdicating it to some guru or god...or government. - Mark

If You Meet The Buddha On The Road...     5/10/1991

Refrain:

If you meet the Buddha on the road...
If you meet the Buddha I've been told...

Kill Him!

I asked the Lord to move a hill

I asked the Lord for good clean fill

I asked the Lord to cleanse my soul

I asked the Lord to help me when I bowl

I asked the Lord to rake my leaves

I asked the Lord to heal my disease

But he just smiled and walked away

and as he left I heard him say

"Heal yourself. Heal yourself..."

Refrain:

I asked the Lord to show me truth

I asked the Lord to make the waters smooth

I asked the Lord to dry my tears

I asked the Lord to take away my fears

I asked the Lord for all good things

I asked the Lord to teach me how to sing

But he just smiled and walked away

And as he left I heard him say

"Teach yourself. Teach yourself..."

Refrain:

I asked the Lord to make me strong

I asked the Lord to make me wise

I asked the Lord for $20 bucks

I asked the Lord if he would provide

I asked the Lord to give me life

I asked the Lord to supervise

But he just smiled and walked away

And as he left I heard him say

"Create yourself. Create yourself.

Know yourself...Love yourself..."

Refrain:
