Banned In Boston (Shut The Funk Up!)
Song #157,
Composition date: 10/30/1990
Commentary Date: 12/2/2007

Commentary:
In the Fall of 1990 George Bush the first, was amassing the troops for "Operation Desert Storm". Even my son Andrew, in kindergarten at the time, was concerned...around the same time the conservatives were all up in arms about the art of Robert Maplethorpe who's work had been funded by the National Endowment for the Arts...And the TV evangelists like Jim and Tammy Baker ruled the land of TV...Anyway, digging this song up out of my box at the back of my closet was a surprise...I'd kind of forgotten about it. It's a little scary how relevant it still is...I hope you like it...but if you don't... well...see the chorus! ;o)

Banned In Boston (a.k.a. Shut The Funk Up!)            8/14/1990

The government thinks that we are as stupid as them

They think we'll gladly give them our children to send

To some foreign shore to fight and maybe to die

So our cars can run and our airplanes can fly

Factories too quiet, just a temporary slump

Nothing we can't fix by kicking some dictators rump

Politicians tell us what they think we want to hear

But there's something we must tell them in this election year...

Refrain:

Shut the funk up! Shut the funk up!

Shut the funk up! Shut the funk up!

Banned in Boston, Too hot to handle

Canned in Austin, caused a scandal

Shut the funk up! Shut the funk up!

Shut the funk up! Shut the funk up!

I had fun watching TV preachers today

They sure don't let the words of Jesus get in their way

Their bottom line is that they get their viewers to pay

If Christ is watching I know what He'd like to say...

Refrain:

Shut the funk up! Shut the funk up!

Shut the funk up! Shut the funk up!

Banned in Boston, Too hot to handle

Canned in Austin, caused a scandal

Shut the funk up! Shut the funk up!

Shut the funk up! Shut the funk up!

the Constitution says that I can say what I think

But now these moral giants want to throw me into the clink

But a jury of my peers would have to let me go free

Even if I photographed how penis pee...

Refrain:

Shut the funk up! Shut the funk up!

Shut the funk up! Shut the funk up!

Banned in Boston, Too hot to handle

Canned in Austin, caused a scandal

Shut the funk up! Shut the funk up!

Shut the funk up! Shut the funk up!

Last night I dreamed the words of Reverend Martin Luther King

Filled these dirty streets with people rising up to sing

Our leaders and the media were very surprised

When we refused to lie down and be lobotomized...

Refrain:

Shut the funk up! Shut the funk up!

Shut the funk up! Shut the funk up!

Banned in Boston, Too hot to handle

Canned in Austin, caused a scandal

Shut the funk up! Shut the funk up!

Shut the funk up! Shut the funk up!
